MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Minnesota hunters killed more than 40 wolves over the hunt’s opening weekend, slightly fewer than the number harvested in last year’s inaugural wolf hunt opener.

Since the season started on Saturday, hunters killed 41 wolves in two of the zones open for hunting, according to DNR reports. In the northwest zone, hunters harvested 28 wolves. In the northeast zone, hunters harvested 13 wolves.

The early season total hunters can harvest is 106. Close to 40 percent of that total was reached over the weekend.

Last year, hunters harvested 50 wolves during the opening weekend. However, the total number of wolves that hunters could kill in the early season then was close to double what it is this year.
The wolf hunt began last year after wolves came off the endangered species list. It remains controversial.
